ARTIST - ILLUSTRATOR - PRINTMAKER
Based in southwest England, I am an artist, illustrator and printmaker, driven by a commitment to traditional methodologies and human expression. My work explores narrative and form; undefined and ambiguous, with the intention to provoke thought and invite interpretation. Inspired by literature, landscape and pattern, I am drawn to spaces that lie somewhere between clarity and mystery, with a familiarity to both immerse and lose yourself in.
My practice is grounded in a deep appreciation for art history and tradition. I engage with techniques and methodologies that I draw from artistic masters, while blending them with a contemporary lens to form a bridge between the past and present. It is through my ongoing study of historical craftsmanship and storytelling that I find the drive to evolve my work, developing my own visual language through which I can express thoughts and ideas that cannot be put into words.
While my most recent work leans towards architectural and geometric patterns, I am predominantly fascinated with organic structures and natural forms. What began as separate explorations of atmospheric sea-scapes and hexagonal labyrinths, I have found a unifying thread in rhythm, repetition and the visual tension between structure and fluidity. I find these concepts strange, yet intriguing; between dreams and reality.
Printmaking has become an integral aspect of my practice- an unexpected passion I found during my time at university. Having previously been focused on drawing and painting, exploring printmaking opened up something new in my creative process, finding a natural transition in the mark-making and tactile nuances of print. Monotype mirrors the spontaneity I find in painting, while intaglio and relief share a precision and thoughtfulness that reflect the way I draw- but each individual process introduces an unpredictable, alchemical quality that initiated my love for print. The element of surprise in the accidental textures and variations allows me to challenge my instinct for control and embrace imperfection as a part of the creative process.
